Has it really been 8 months since my last post?
I've been thinking about blogging lately, but have no follow through.
So here goes:
I just finished watching a documentary by arguably the best documentarian ever: Errol Morris. It was called 'Standard Operating Procedure' and it was intense. It depicts the events surrounding the Abu Gharib incident, the aftermath and how the soldiers processed the horrific acts, and most importantly it showed how low-ranking officers were 'thrown under the bus', taking the fall so that the administration's officials went scot-free. These 'scapegoats' were not all innocent, but they were in situations that were lose-lose. Not to mention the pictures, oh the pictures. Disgusting - one's you or I have never seen before. Funny, they made me want to look away, until... eventually, I became used to seeing them. Not that I was comfortable seeing them, but there was this familiarity with the situation by the end of the film to the point that I was no longer fazed.
It left me aggravated that so many nobodies did time for carrying out orders of the 'somebodies'. No resolution. Just leftover bitterness and hatred. I can't imagine what the average Arab guy thinks about this.
